ABSTRACT

157 Chapter 5 takes a closer look at visual political communication. It asks: when are images political, and what tools and work steps can help analysts explore such images? To answer these questions, the chapter introduces various schools of thought that deal with image analysis, with a strong focus on semiotics—the theory of how signs work. The chapter illustrates how this theory can be neatly combined with discourse analysis to provide a powerful approach to complex communication analysis. Using this approach, readers learn to analyse journalistic photography, newspaper layout, and visual design.
