ABSTRACT
237 Chapter 7 examines the politics of three-dimensional space. It discusses how people interact with monuments, sculptures, architecture, and urban design in real time, and it asks: What are we to make of these interactions, and how do design choices shape what can or cannot happen in such spaces? Using practical examples like a gigantic mall in Singapore, a famous painting of a Chinese city, and a railway line in Tokyo, the chapter shows how scholars study physical spaces, their representations, and the meanings that people derive from moving through such spaces.
