ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces some of the intellectual sources of modern Romanian nationalism and antisemitism. It discusses the impact of Houston Stewart Chamberlain's racial ideas on three Romanian authors who shaped the debate on national specificity at the end of the nineteenth century. It also highlights the growing importance attached to the so-called ‘Jewish Question’ in Romanian political culture and how fears of ethnic miscegenation grew in intensity after 1900.
