ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the obsession with racial degeneration and how it shaped the development of a medical discourse about the health of the Romanian nation in general and the Romanian peasant in particular. It shows how prominent physicians discussed the alleged degeneration of the race while, at the same time, embracing ideas of racial hygiene and eugenics. Their scientific expertise served the biopolitical aims of the emerging Romanian nation-state.
