ABSTRACT
From its modern inception in the seventeenth century to the present, the Sacred Heart of Jesus has been debated, promoted, and attacked from within as well as from without the Catholic Church. Images of the heart of Jesus vary considerably and correspond to shifting patterns of devotional practice as well as theological interpretation. Focusing on images and their uses, this essay will trace the history of the devotion among European and American Catholics.
