ABSTRACT

Asylum migration to Western Europe increased sharply toward the end of the twentieth century, particularly after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Because of this and other factors, the willingness to admit refugees declined in the Western world (Schuster 2000). In the period 1995-2005 approximately 50 to 70 per cent of asylum requests were rejected in the Netherlands (De Boom, Engbersen & Leerkes 2006). Moreover, those who are recognised as refugees increasingly receive temporary residence permits (Doornbos & Groenendijk 2001).
