ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses the issue of so-called orphan works – films with no known rights holders, and considers the definition, scope, and some of the underlying causes of the orphan works problem, as well as a number of proposed solutions. An example from EYE’s collection will demonstrate how the search for rights holders can significantly delay the distribution of an archival film.
