ABSTRACT
Up to this point, I have examined how and why businesses should become sustainable. It is now time to turn our attention towards the role of the financial sector in enabling sustainable development. The work that will be generated by efforts to meet the Climate Goals and the Global Goals will require financing. While governments should play an important role, the bulk of the financing will have to come from financial institutions such as banks (including development banks), insurance companies, pension funds, and impact investors. The crucial issue I want to consider in this chapter is how the financial sector can contribute to financing sustainable development.
