ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with urban change and gentrification in Brixton, London. It focuses on the coverage of such processes by the Brixton Buzz blog, which is a prime example of hyperlocal news produced by citizen journalists. The chapter draws from theoretical frameworks from journalism, in order to question the identity, status, and role of those who produce news. It focuses on the rhetoric propagated by the website to resist gentrification and demonstrates that language reflects the attitude, beliefs, and concerns of the local community and is thus a powerful indicator of community reaction to urban change over time.
