ABSTRACT
The civil wars in countries around the Mediterranean, but also the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland left many people with the impression that religion is a source of hatred and violence towards people with a different conviction. Religion is thus viewed as a source of insecurity. This view has even gained some popularity among anti-religious opinion makers, as if it were the ultimate proof that religion is a source of intolerance.
