ABSTRACT
Contextual theology enables the preservation of a sentiment of Moluccanness that affirms the ethnic community. The author analyzes the practice, process, and implementation of Moluccan contextual theology. Theologians select Moluccan cultural forms based on their accordance with Christian values, and liturgically adapt and theologically transform them. A top-down and bottom-up approach are combined: lived realities transform theologies and theologies transform religious attitudes and congregational practices. Ministers play an important role. They are located in between theology and lived religion. Contrasting opinions among theologians, ministers, and congregants in a variety of congregational settings influence the implementation of contextual theology.
