ABSTRACT
Structuralists tend to deplore the cult of anniversaries for preaching false notions of human superiority to nature. The part of this chapter examines ways in which, through different phases of history, the cult of commemorations has cast a shadow beyond the grave. The cult of anniversaries diminishes opportunities for free-lance operators. Counter-commemorations offer a way to direct the cult of anniversaries toward more coherent and adventurous goals. The avant-garde craved a new culture that would celebrate themselves rather than the old masters whom they wished to supersede. To be modern meant to repudiate the celebrands of the bourgeoisie. Bimillennial consciousness will encourage people to combine the identities they inherit with new ones of their own choosing. It will exploit commemorations as devices for diversifying identity instead of consolidating it. As the cult of anniversaries gets enlarged through the publicizing of personal pantheons, intellectuals will purvey transnational identity, thus obliging cultural managers who serve national governments to transcend national agendas.
