ABSTRACT
The aim of this chapter is to introduce several methods for observing teachers. Some of these methods lend themselves to self-observation through journaling, audiotaping, or videotaping. Other methods involve collaborating with another teacher or action researcher in the observation. Using the second approach could involve an open-ended observation, during which the observer systematically records classroom observations in his or her notes. Or it could involve more structured observations based on a checklist on which an observer would record the frequency of a set of prespecified behaviors.
