ABSTRACT
This chapter evaluates the various sourcing strategies available to retailers such as offshore sourcing, out-sourcing, and use of intermediaries or direct sourcing. It applies conceptual models of sourcing to the international fashion retail sector. The chapter analyses the corporate social responsibility (CSR) consequences of offshore sourcing and how to reconcile commercial and ethical pressures using Sri Lanka as a case study. It explores the sourcing of retail products offshore with particular reference to issues pertaining to CSR. The international fashion retail supply chain and the intricate network of relationships between retail buyers and a global network of independent contractors. The chapter discusses the supply chain issues that have arisen from an increase in global sourcing namely, balancing cost, and lead time and flexibility considerations. Sri Lankan garment suppliers have developed strong relationships with US and European Union (EU) retailers over long time periods, trading relationships of 10 to 20 years were common.
