ABSTRACT

Health is in a dance with community – health cannot exist without community; communities cannot exist without healthy individuals. In the vortex of human evolution, a number of strands interacted, and intertwined as they interacted. This chapter considers the course of humanity's social and cultural history from the very beginning. The culture that gives humanity meaning would be threatened by the process of thought, which allowed human culture to succeed in our evolutionary niche but now threatens to cut the human experience itself into small unrelated parts, breaking communities apart in the process. Health, the expression of the effective function of human culture, would be caught in this vice. Without thought and language, there would be no culture. And without relationships there would be no thought and language at all. Without thought and language, there would be no tool development.
