ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss online Self-Help Kiosks (SHKs) that were developed to support pre-service teachers at a prestigious Australian university, Monash University, in revising and reinforcing their mathematical skills to prepare them for the numeracy demands of their future careers as teachers. We commence with an explanation of the Australian context that drove the need for the SHKs. Then, we describe the principles underpinning the SHKs, the structure of the SHKs, and the content in the SHKs. Next, we present findings from research conducted on the pre-service teachers’ use of and reactions to the SHKs. We conclude with recommendations and considerations related to the form of online mathematics learning platform that we employed.
