ABSTRACT

Online questionnaires are questionnaires that are administered over the internet to gather data about behaviour, experiences, attitudes, beliefs and values. They are used as a research method within a variety of methodologies including survey research, grounded theory and ethnography, and can be used as a standalone method or combined with other online or offline methods. Online questionnaires are used in wide variety of disciplines and fields of study including health and medicine, the social sciences, education, second language research and business and marketing. Asking respondents to understand another person’s perspective, or asking them how they see other people, can be a useful way to ask about sensitive topics in online questionnaires. There are a wide variety of organisations that provide tools, software, templates and hosting platforms for designing and administering online questionnaires, some of which are open source and free to access, use and adapt, whereas others have significant costs attached.
