ABSTRACT

On a scale of 1–10, where 1 is difficult and 10 is easy, how do you feel about asking social questions in a conversation with the following types of people:

a member of your family?

a friend?

a new person?

a prospective girlfriend/boyfriend?

a group of friends?

In some conversations you may feel as if you need a way to promote or prolong the other person’s comments, because you seem to be doing all the work of keeping things going. One way to do this is to ask questions that require more than a one-word answer, and the skill is just to take on board the concept of open and closed questions.
