ABSTRACT

A retrospective study investigated management outcome of patients referred to the Orthoptic Department with ocular motility abnormalities following orbital injury. 73 patients were identified. 7% had spontaneous resolution within four months. 81% were unresolved. 63% of the unresolved cases had orbital surgery while the rest did not. 40% of patients who underwent orbital repair recovered while 43% had unresolved symptoms. Strabismus surgery only occurred in 4/73 of cases (3 following orbital repair). Long term resolution (4–12 months) occurred in 10/73 of cases. 10% (7/73) were discharged with untreated unresolved symptoms. 29% failed to attend or was lost to follow-up. This study has led to an improved liaison between Orthoptics and the Maxillary-Facial Department.
