ABSTRACT

The Order Clupeiformes comprises one suborder (Clupeoidei) with three families in the WCNA-Pristigasteridae, Clupeidae and Engraulidae (Nelson 1994). In this book the pristigasterids and clupeids are treated together in the chapter entitled Clupeidae as the ELH stages are so similar and differentiation is difficult. The engraulids are treated separately in the chapter entitled

Engraulidae. Identification of adults has been recently treated by Nizinski & Munroe (2003) for Engraulidae, Munroe (2003) for Pristigasteridae, and Munroe & Nizinski (2003) for Clupeidae.
