ABSTRACT

This order has very distinctive round or globular-shaped fishes, and all ELH stages are similarly shaped. It comprises several suborders-the Lophioidei with the family Lophiidae, the Antennarioidei with the family Antennariidae, the Chaunacoidei with the family Chaunacidae, the Ogcocephaloidei with the Ogcocephahdae and an extralimital family; and the Ceratioidei with 11 familes. All species have the anterior dorsal spines modified as a luring apparatus and have been the subject of a number of studies (Pietsch 1984, Pietsch & Grobecker 1987). The following chapters treat all of these interesting families.
