ABSTRACT
In this introductory chapter, the phenomenon of the theatre laboratory is established. Its lineages and referents are scoped while focus is placed on how the term operates as both nomenclature and adjectival noun. Recent scholarship on the theatre laboratory is summarised and the aims and structure of the present book are described.
