ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information to the people company regarding what events may result in an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspection and the scope of such an inspection. An employee complaint, the occurrence of an accident or a catastrophe, the presence of an imminent hazard, a notification by another agency of the existence of an allegedly unsafe condition, may all result in an OSHA inspection, and even this list is not all-inclusive. Unprogrammed inspections are generally conducted as the result of the existence of an alleged imminent danger, the occurrence of a fatality or catastrophe, or the receipt of a complaint or referral. Every inspection, whether programmed or unprogrammed, comprehensive or partial, shall include, in addition to its principal focus: A review of the employer’s injury and illness records, An assessment of the employer’s hazard communication program, An assessment of the employer’s lockout/tagout program and An evaluation of the employer’s safety and health management program.
