Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards are categorized by General industry, Construction, Maritime, and Agriculture. For most safety professionals, the probability of a compliance inspection is fairly small when comparing the number of compliance officers with the number of employers and workplaces in the United States. Compliance with the OSHA standards is the "bare bones" minimum necessary to avoid the potential penalties under the OSH Act. With no prior knowledge, the safety professional will receive the proverbial "knock at the door" and the OSHA compliance officer(s) will present himself/herself to the company at the security entrance or front desk. With the consent of the safety professional or other agent of the employer, the inspection usually starts with a review of the OSHA recordkeeping documents and specific requested compliance programs, records, or documents. When the closing conference is completed and the compliance officer(s) depart the property, the time starts for OSHA to issue the citation.
