ABSTRACT

This case tells the story of a community group, the Ouseburn Trust, who continue to play a key role in the development of an inner urban valley of Newcastle upon Tyne in northern England. The group has been very successful in revalidating the Valley from a marginal area in the city to a vibrant and culturally rich place for visitors, workers and companies. This has been possible due to their strong commitment to the place and key strategic linkages with the formal government arenas in Newcastle. However, the ‘scaling up’ of the Valley that the Ouseburn Trust made possible has made innovation difficult as other actors, such as local government and developers, have become interested in the area.
