ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author recognizes a concern about increased service work for women from her own experience and wondered about how issues related to integrating work and family life might affect her in the future. During graduate school, she develops an interest in women in science and read voraciously about the topic. While the women in her department felt his harassment most acutely and personally, a sexist bully is bad for everyone. The author needs relationships for emotional support, but she also needed mentors to help her grow as a teacher, collaborators for research projects, and colleagues with similar interests for institutional service. Having moved directly from her Ph.D. program with no teaching experience beyond being a lab TA, she struggled her first couple of years to feel comfortable in the classroom and develop as a teacher.
