ABSTRACT
The Hashemite elite, aware of the powerful external pressures to prevent an Islamist success story in terms of parliamentary power in the region, used successive electoral amendments and general elections to rein in and diminish the translation of popular support for the Brotherhood into a parliamentary majority. This chapter examines this passive-aggressive struggle between monarch and the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood (JMB). It incorporates the factors which led the JMB to boycott general elections in 2010, a decision that resulted in the Brotherhood being out of parliament for the first time in twenty-one years. The chapter explores the significance of the Arab Spring within Jordan and the role of the JMB to draw out domestic effects in terms of the increasingly precarious position of the organization. It also examines Jordan's delicate tribal and Palestinian balances, as well as external factors such as Syria, Hamas, and events in Egypt and the Arab Gulf states to explore the future options for the JMB.
