ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on parenting and the children in families because they are the most vulnerable. Helping parents discover that children who experience genuine respect are more prepared to generate meaningful respect is key to Respect-Focused Therapy-oriented family therapy. For example, the relationship between the parents may influence the relationships they independently have with each child and the triangulations that can occur as a result. It is imperative to help parent figures gain their own sense of grounded respect and attachment, as much as possible, while also helping them create a stronger respectful bond with their child. So, if respect is experienced and learned in stages and if that process is interrupted by life events or the lack of familial respect, then it makes sense that those children, and the adults they become, are less vested in the notion of respect for themselves or others.
