ABSTRACT

The chief reason for heading to Paris was the lure of the Cartan seminar. In the published notes of the previous seminar, the participants analyzed the sorts of constructions that were involved in our approach and gave a more conceptual way of passing from K(π, n ) to K(π, n +1) that I found stimulating and insightful, and I still think that these methods deserve further analysis. During the year in Paris I did not manage to do this, though two of my students,

Gerald Decker and Ross Hamsher, worked in this direction and published their work.
