Whatistheproblemofknowledge,andhowdoesitarise?Italwaysarises fromdoubt,fromuncertaintyconcerningone'sownorotherpeople's claimstoknowledge:fromtherealizationthattheseclaimsarenotwell founded;thattheyarebasedoninsufficientreasons.Itarises,incritically mindedpeople,especiallywhenthereisamultiplicityofconflictingand competingclaimstoknowledge.Asmentionedbefore,conflictingstories couldexistinEgyptwithouttheconsciousnessofaclash.Butamongthe morecriticallymindedGreekcosmologists,themultiplicityofconflicting andusuallydogmaticclaimsofthedifferentcosmologicaltheoristsledto thequestion:Howcanwedecidebetweentheseconflictingstories?Which storyshouldweprefer?
