ABSTRACT

Europe had been embroiled in World War I for three years when the United States entered the war on April 6, 1917. The “war to end all wars” changed the lives of Americans forever as the nation left the Victorian era and moved toward the advances and challenges of the twentieth century. Yet, no matter what the global events, human nature keeps people mired in their own personal triumphs and troubles, and thus it was for Lucy Mercer and for Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.
