ABSTRACT
The stories of each of the superintendents I interviewed contain representative challenges that are woven into the fabric of our society. In order to give the reader a sense of their voices, I have largely quoted them without comment, although their interpretations of their situations are subjective. For example, all three of the superintendents who identified as Caucasian discussed racial issues in their districts as being highly charged.
