ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book demonstrated the multi-faceted nature of capacity building which can occur at individual, organisational, local, regional, state and national levels. As experience has shown, the impact of capacity building cannot be overlooked. It also suggested that capacity building can empower people and can transform organisations and communities. This book presented variety of capacity development programmes that include women in leadership, rural public works programmes, local training programmes, improved water management programmes, improved crop management programmes, improved access to markets for agricultural produce and addressing corruption in public sector organisations. It demonstrated the many different processes and programmes linked to capacity building across the Asia-Pacific region. Capacity building is now widely recognised by governments and international development organisations as a critical and essential part of sustainable development.
