ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to highlight the relationship between the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) and Bord Failte (BF) as a case study of a co-operative partnership which operates at the Regional/National Transjurisdictional level. In the partnership between the NITB and BF, the terrorist violence in Northern Ireland and the political sensitivities surrounding cross-border cooperation have impacted on the success of the relationship. When analysing the underlying reasons behind the development of the partnership between the NITB and BF it is also interesting to assess the role of the two governments. In the relationship between the NITB and BF the potential access to funding and resources has acted to facilitate greater co-operation and partnership development. In the partnership between the NITB and BF, both boards have different priorities in the type of tourist products or attractions they wish to see developed and promoted. During the 1990s both parts of Ireland experienced a period of significant growth in tourism.
