ABSTRACT
The biomedical model of medicine is the dominant narrative that guides physicians when diagnosing and treating patients with multiple somatic symptoms (MSS). However, the biomedical model is ineffective for patients with MSS, and may even cause further suffering for them. Looking at physicians’ education and training, patients’ own conditioning towards biomedicine, and influence from profit-seeking corporations helps uncover reasons why the biomedical approach continues to be applied despite its ineffectiveness to help patients with MSS.
