ABSTRACT

Patterned texts form an important part of young children’s reading repertoires as they are easy to learn, ingratiating themselves into their memories so that they are always to hand for children to relive and enjoy. They are also important for reading development as they encourage prediction in reading, inviting children to make well-informed guesses as to the next word. It is not only repeated words and phrases that help young readers; rhyme and rhythm can also help us to anticipate words and decode those that are unfamiliar.
