ABSTRACT

Peat has been used as a fuel in the Northern hemisphere for at least 2,000 years. Laboriously-cut sods, dried outdoors by sun and wind, are still the main energy source for domestic heating and cooking for many remote communities in Northwest and Central Europe, where other energy sources may be expensive or scarce.
