ABSTRACT

Consistencies between situations and between aspects of the same person allow the reader to form an impression of the whole person. There is more to person perception than perceiving that another person is a person, and recognizing who that person is. Person perception refers to processes through which the people identify others as social objects, rather than merely as objects. Bruner and Tagiuri concluded that the people formation of impressions of others is not accurate, even if many of the reader will form the same impression given the same information. Since the people might have a number of different roles in different social situations, they strive to manage themselves so as to give an impression that is appropriate in each context. One consequence of failing to manage the impression the people make is embarrassment; they feel that they have lost the esteem of others by a deficiency in the people presented self.
