ABSTRACT

Practice research is a unique form of social enquiry performed by practitioners for the express purpose of informing practice. Practice research attempts to challenge the traditional performance of research by privileged academics on powerless research subjects. The decolonising of traditional approaches to research with migrants promises creative and critical ways of thinking about and doing research. PROMEQ New Start Finland! was a research study reflecting the core elements of practice research, with the aim to perform inclusive, empowering research. The study was conducted in partnership with multiple stakeholders, academic researchers, practitioners, community and municipal services and refugees. It aimed to measure and promote refugees’ quality of life and social integration and was mindful of the need to employ empowering and co-production methodologies. The backstage performance, including the rationale for practice research on migrants, is not always well considered by practice researchers nor made evident to research subjects.
