ABSTRACT

Show children examples of flags and other national symbols. Can they recognise them? What do they represent? (e.g. Union Jack incorporates flags of four countries, U.S.A. flag incorporates the fifty-two states, Devon County symbol shows river and countryside). Discuss what they (or their family) might have on their own personal flag: demonstrate how they could divide their sheet into quarters with a symbol in each quarter, or perhaps have one symbol like Japan. Each child then draws his/her personal flag for display, writing a few lines of explanation to say ‘I put these things on my flag because . . .’.
