ABSTRACT

In 29 Code of Federal Regulations 1910.132–140, regulatory requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE) are found. The provision of PPE when appropriate is a fundamental part of any safety program. This chapter looks at how to determine when such equipment is necessary and identify appropriate PPE and resources to acquire the necessary items. The first step in the personal protective equipment process is to identify those tasks or jobs that present some type of hazard to the employee. For each job in a company, a job hazard analysis (JHA) should be performed to determine if there are components within the job that may require the use of personal protective equipment. A job hazard analysis is most effectively done by using a team as opposed to one individual. Hearing conservation is a process through which an employer strives to reduce employee exposure to excessive noise while on the job.
