ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the identification and use of signature strengths to promote well-being. Signature strengths are central to one’s character. Using them enhances well-being, and helps individuals move towards highly valued goals. The Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) may be used to identify signature strengths. The 24 character strengths assessed by this inventory are classified into subgroups associated with each of six virtues (wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance and transcendence). The character strengths associated with the virtue of wisdom are creativity, curiosity, judgement, love of learning and perspective. The character strengths associated with the virtue of courage are bravery, perseverance, honesty and zest. The character strengths associated with the virtue of humanity are love, kindness and social intelligence. The character strengths associated with the virtue of justice are teamwork, fairness and leadership. The character strengths associated with the virtue of temperance are forgiveness, humility, prudence and self-regulation. The character strengths associated with the virtue of transcendence are appreciation of beauty and excellence, gratitude, hope, humour and spirituality. Strengths most strongly associated with well-being are love, hope, gratitude and zest.
