ABSTRACT

The P.S.C.’s views happen to be rather explicit. But pages can easily be filled with quotations illustrating thinking on similar lines in the other Christian Democratic movements. The M.R.P.’s statutory object is a political, economic, and social democracy which will:

Guarantee respect for personal rights and civic freedoms, and ensure the primacy of labour over capital and of merit over birth or wealth. (Statutes, Art. 2.)

The starting point is man, not as a member of a mass, but as an individual with reason, responsibility, and potentially infinite value. For the C.D.U. ‘Man is the centre’. Labour is valued as ‘a moral achievement, not a mere commodity’. For the Conservative People’s Party in Switzerland the basis is ‘the Christian conception of human personality and society’.
