ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses personnel management, personnel control, activities on the store floor, workforce and the planning thereof, and the influence of personnel costs on the returns. Considering the relatively heavy utilisation of the sales function, the focus of personnel control lies Personnel control mainly with the store personnel. It is a misconception that sales personnel are only busy serving the customers. Only a relatively small part of the work of the store personnel has to do with personal service. Obviously, to ensure a good self service environment, it requires much more personnel deployment than one would initially expect. In addition to the problem of maintaining the quality of the minimum capacity, an important aspect in personnel control is adapting the input of the personnel to fluctuations in demand. Personnel forms the biggest cost in retail, which is why the retailer is continuously seeking labour-saving methods. Personnel control focuses on the optimal deployment of quantity personnel.
