ABSTRACT

Xanthan gum (XG) a high molecular weight, water-soluble, microbial exo-polysaccharide derived from Xanthomonas campestris. It has an extensive application in diverse fields and widely been utilized as an additive in various industrial and biomedical applications viz., agriculture, food, paints, textile, toiletries, petroleum recovery, materials construction, cosmeceuticals, etc. Moreover, it has also shown great potential in the pharmaceutical field, including drug delivery with certain modifications to achieve the desired application. Moreover, XG derived biomaterials are suitable for targeted drug delivery applications, where such modification will be well suited for pharmaceutical dosage form design. Therefore, in this chapter, the significant use of XG for various pharmaceutical applications, including its brief overall descriptions, chemical structure, development of interesting pharmaceutical formulations including drug delivery applications and possible modifications for various pharmaceutical applications are well highlighted herewith with future potentials.
