ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 outlines Phase 2 of CBT-T. In this phase, we use behavioural experiments and cognitive restructuring in order to address the ‘broken’ cognitive link between eating and weight. The principle method of modifying the key cognitions is behavioural experimentation, and the process of such experiments is outlined and illustrated with clinical examples. The approach is again based on relatively rapid change, involving substantial changes in food (e.g., starting with highly feared foods) and other behavioural changes. A smaller set of purely cognitive methods is used, where appropriate. Monitoring of progress against specific cognitions is key, and we begin to plan for Phases 3 and 4, as appropriate
