This chapter provides a walk-through of various definitions of the art of living, followed by a more detailed discussion of some of the major concepts. It allows us to better understand and discusses Schmid's art of living concept Lebenskunst, which will be argued for as a suitable philosophical concept for an educational approach to this topic. The chapter reviews Foucault's concept of the care of the self, which provided a starting point for Schmid and his theory of Lebenskunst. The overview of various approaches to an art of living has been given, and it has been shown that different interpretations of living a good life have been proposed in philosophical history. The chapter provides a discussion of various emotions and their relation to developing an art of living and living a good life. A different conceptual understanding, but also prescriptive, is proposed by Paul Mackendrick, who distinguishes between simply living and living well.
