ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses five speakers with unusual realizations of the English liquid consonants, /l/ and /r/, who form part of a larger group currently being studied. Perceptual and instrumental evidence is presented to illustrate the different articulatory strategies adopted by these speakers. They maintain phonological contrasts by using realizations which are atypical, but which relate to adult normal realizations in consistent and perceptually-driven ways.
