ABSTRACT

As child abuse is a very large problem involving many children, it is unlikely that there will ever be enough resources to adequately manage more than a small proportion of cases, particularly those cases that need long-term treatment. Treatment involves treating not only the abused child but also the family in which the abuse occurred. The family may need help and treatment because of the trauma that has occurred as a result of the abuse or treatment may be required because of underlying problems in the family that allowed the abuse to occur. In addition, the offender will need treatment.
