ABSTRACT

The aims of a physical programme can be considered simply as maintaining or improving the current level of function whilst ensuring that future potential problems are avoided. In general, it is not just a single therapeutic intervention, but a range of physical techniques that are incorporated into the management plan to achieve the best results. Where possible, standing is recommended as part of the 24-hour management programme for people with spasticity. Careful assessment and trial of equipment ensures that the individual is able to stand with optimal alignment for a sustained period of time, both comfortably and safely and in a way that allows them to utilise their muscle activity to the maximum. Attention to the physical management of spasticity is a vital component of any spasticity management plan. Before a physical management programme can be instigated, a thorough assessment of the spasticity, its associated features and, most importantly, its impact on the individual is a necessity.
